retouching

retouching: fine editing or altering images beyond what is included in the typical post production workflow.

what's included?

all the photos you receive will have been edited. editing includes color grading, cropping, correcting exposure and otherwise adjusting the photo globally.

what's not included?

fine detail work like (including but not limited to) skin smoothing, body slimming or altering, removing or adding people, removing background objects, etcetera.

i.e. altering reality.

my philosophy

as a general rule, i will never preemptively alter any person's face or body, or the background setting beyond removing something that isn't permanent or a natural occurrence or consequence. you are beautiful just the way you are and i don't feel it's right to alter a person's being without being asked. retouching is always performed by request.

examples include:

people: i do not alter the body, face shape, hair color, hairstyle, makeup, etc.

background setting: removing people or objects from the background, altering the background, adding something to the setting that wasn't there in the first place.

natural consequence: when people move, so does clothing, jewelry, hair, and so on. documentary/candid photography means photographing what's happening how it's happening - "imperfections" and all. fabric can wrinkle, necklaces can move off center, strands of hair can blow in the wind, people/cars/objects may be in the background when shooting anywhere - the city, the beach, a park, a museum or historic landmark, a restaurant or bar.

it's impossible to photograph natural human interaction while simultaneously controlling it so some "imperfections" are to be expected. in fact, that's what adds feeling, life and authenticity to an image! why mess with a good thing, right?

however, retouching services may still be option should you feel you want an image doctored up. please note: there are some cases where certain work is not possible - sometimes leaving the photo as it is, is the better option. beyond a certain level of retouching will result in you not looking like "you."
